Nikolai Afanasyev

Nikolai Mikhailovich Afanasyev was born on November 14, 1916 in St. Petersburg, and died on March 15, 2009 at the age of 92. He was a firearms designer best known for his work creaking the TKB-011 and the TKB-0136, the latter which took place in the Project Abakan trials.
History
In 1938 he graduated from a Tekhnikum of the Mechanization of Agriculture. In 1939 he was drafted into the Red Army. In September 1941 Afanasyev went to the fronts lines of the Nazi invasion, but in the fall of 1941 he was recalled to work on armaments. His first project was to improve the fuses for the 82 and 120mm motors. In 1948 Afanasyev was transferred to the Tula Design Bureau. During his time at the Tula Arms Plant, he was working on aircraft weapons. By 1950 Afanasyev developed a 12.7mm aircraft machine gun that was adopted for helicopters in 1953. Afanasyev, working with Yakushev created 23mm anti-aircraft armament which went into production in 1960. Afanasyev started working on small arms with several prototypes, including the TKB-0136 which later participated in the Project Abakan trials. He later created the OTs-02 (TKB-0217) submachine gun.
Awards
- In 1967 he was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation.
- In 1968 he was awarded the Honored Inventor of Russia.
- Order of the October Revolution in 1977
- He was awarded the honorary title of Hero of Socialist Labour in 1986.
