Sergei Ivanovich Mosin

History

Mosin entered into a military academy in 1861, at the age of 12 where he excelled as a young officer. In 1867, he entered the Alexandrovskoye Military High School in Moscow and upon leaving in 1870, he decided to go to the artillery branch and transferred to the Mikhailovskoye Artillery Academy. He graduated in 1875 and transferred to the Tula Arsenal where he became the head of the machining division.

While at Tula, Mosin began his career as a weapons designer. His first project was to the Berdan II rifle, and later collaborated with Nagant to design what is now known as the Mosin-Nagant in 1891. Some of the items was borrowed from Nagant's design, for example the attachment of the magazine spring to the magazine base plate. Mosins original design, the spring was not attached to the baseplate and could be lost during cleaning in the field. Another one of the features barrowed was the interrupter, something inside the receiver that prevents double feeding, and a clip that holds 5 rounds. The original design by Mosin lacked the interrupter.

Mosin rose to the rank of Major General and appointed as the director of the Sestroretsk arsenal.
