Nikolay Fyodorovich Makarov
Nikolay Fyodorovich Makarov was born on May 22, 1914 and died on May 13, 1988. He is known for the pistol named after him. He is buried at the 1st Cemetery in Tula.
History
In 1936 he enrolled to the Tula Mechanical Institute. He was preparing for his graduation when the Germans invaded the Soviet Union. He was sent sent to the Zagorski Machine Works where he worked as an engineer. The plant was evacuated to Kirov Oblast as the war progressed. In 1944 Makarov returned to the Tula Mechanical Institute where he graduated with honors. In 1945 he took part in a pistol design competition to find a replacement for the Tokarev pistol and 1895 Nagant Revolver. The Tokarev pistol had been in used since 1930, and the Nagant revolver since 1895. Makarovs design was based on the Walther PP won the competition and was adopted in 1951. He continued designing firearms in Tula until his retirement in 1974.
He died on 13 May 1988 as a result of his seventh heart attack and was buried at the 1st Municipal Cemetery in Tula.
