AK Mag Buyers Guide
The AK Rifle Buyers Guide is located here
Foreword
The purpose of this guide is to help the beginner AK enthusiast understand what to look for, what to avoid, and considerations to make when considering purchase of an AK magazine. While I will list a number of surplus military mags, as well as commercial production, this is not meant to be an exhaustive catalog of all the variations of AK magazines. That would be an ambitious project we may attempt at some point, and beyond the scope of this guide.
AK Magazines are something I’ve been interested in for several years now, and over that time I have purchased, shot, and sold dozens of variations of magazines. I quickly noticed there are certain patterns and features to look for when purchasing magazines, and thought I would share this with newcomers to the Kalash scene, as well as short notes about specific magazines I have experience with.
Summarizing what to look for in an AK Magazine is easy; body material, thickness, and texture are considerations, as well as weight, length, and magwell fitment. However, the single most important feature to me is the presence of reinforcements in AK Magazines. Yes, certain magazines are prone to denting, rusting, or cracking, but the most common and concerning point of failure in my mind is first, the locking lugs, and second, the feed lips. In this author’s humble opinion, most shooters will never, in their lifetime, put enough rounds through their AK to, say, shoot out a 4150V barrel, or wear out a magazine spring. However, it is very feasible to use a cheap magazine enough that you wear out these failure points. Generally speaking, all military production magazines will have both steel lugs and feed lips, with a few exceptions, such as early longtop bakelites, or polish beryl polymer magazines. Here some images of common reinforced polymer magazines.
Why are reinforced locking tabs and lugs critical, you might ask? Well, it’s a simple matter of geometry. 30 rounds of 124gr Wolf steel case ammo in a Hungarian AK magazine comes in at just under 2 pounds of total weight, all of which is hanging from 2 contact points: the front and rear locking lugs. Factor in the size and shape of an AK magazine, and its easy to imagine banging the mag around while its in the rifle, as well as putting extra weight on those contact points while balancing the rifle on the mag during prone firing. Reinforced lugs can easily handle the stress, and then some. Unreinforced lugs, however, often face an early demise, as pictured here.
Next to consider, are the feed lips. Similar to the locking lugs, many cheaper quality magazines will skimp out on the reinforced feed lips, opting to instead make extra thick polymer feed lips. These are much less prone to failure compared to polymer locking lugs, however, they are still much less robust and reliable than steel magazines or reinforced polymer magazines. The big drawbacks to all polymer magazines are: 1) The constant pressure of keeping a magazine loaded can “stretch out” these feed lips, and 2) There is a slight amount of contact between the feed lips and the rails and bolt carrier inside an AK47. Over time, this can cause a slight amount of wear, although not enough to really be concerned. What **IS** a big cause for concern is what happens when you drop a fully loaded AK magazine. Due to the design of the follower, which creates a large amount of empty space at the bottom of the mag body, the center of gravity typically causes the mag to rotate as it falls, more often than not resulting in the magazine landing on the feed lips. This impact can cause extreme damage, sometimes even breaking the lips off and causing the magazine to eject all 30 cartridges into the dirt. I’m not going to sit here and tell you your PMAG without steel feed lips is going to break eventually, but I will say it likely has a shorter service life than, say, an Arsenal ((10)) magazine.

So, without further ado, here is the r/AK47 Magazine Buyer's Guide! This table is meant to give users a base of info on magazines that are in current common use. Tables are by caliber, and abnormal terms seen in the columns are explained below.
KEY
(Reinforcement of Magazine Locking) Lugs/(Feed) Lips/Body)
- Indicates (Yes or No) for the presence of steel reinforcement in the Front/Rear locking lugs of the mags, Feed Lips, and Body of the mag (or if they're Aluminum)
Quality
- Avoid - *Don't go out of your way to buy these. They can have fitment issues, cause jams and other malfunctions, and can easily be damaged through regular use.*
- Range Worthy - *Good functionality, most likely won't have a fitment issue. Likely to be damaged if dropped while fully loaded on a hard surface, but won't destroy themselves quickly with regular use.*
- Great Mag - *Dependable reliability; durable magazines. You can run these over with a car and other nonsense and still use them for a long, long time.*
Capacities
- Lists the variation of capacities found for that type of magazine
- Price Range USD
- Lists the expected min/max price range of that magazine in USD ($), in general, the higher capacity version of a mag will be seen closer to the max, and vice/versa

Magazine Adapters For .223 / 5.56 and its dependent cartridges, such as 300 Blackout, several companies have manufactured, or currently manufacture adapters to allow the use of AR-15 STANAG magazines in an AK platform. Examples of this are Canis Design Group and Definitive Arms. Other manufacturers, such as Zastava, manufacture AK pattern rifles and pistols that accept AR-15 Magazines from the factory, such as the M90NP and M85NP. While factory installed adapters are generally considered extremely reliable, adapters added on to rifles after manufacture should only be added with extreme caution. Installation of these adapters typically requires extensive milling to the front trunnion and locking lugs to provide clearance for the adapter and its components. This results in loss of structural integrity of the locking lugs, with incidents of rifles losing head-space within a few hundred rounds of adapter installation. Example, provided by Zack at The AK Guy.
"With the Definitive Arms and Canis AR magwell adapters, a significant portion of the right side locking lug in the AK trunnion needs to be milled away. This is to allow the AR magazine to sit high enough to feed reliably. Removing such a significant amount of the trunnion results in a very weak locking lug and an unsafe condition. This VEPR 223 pictured lost headspace in "a few hundred rounds" (quote from the customer that brought it in after it was converted by another gunsmith). In addition, the right side bolt lug was no longer making contact with the trunnion. This is very unsafe and I recommend against these modifications heavily. While the conversion work [on this example] is crude, it was to the measurements in the Canis magwell installation manual." -Zack at The AK Guy
