By 1957 the Magyar Néphadsereg [Hungarian People's Army] decided to replace their bolt action 48.M Mosin Nagant weapons with an AK-47 Kalashnikov machine-carbine. The Hungarian AK was designated AK-55. It was a copy of the Soviet AK-47 (A = Avtomat, K = Kalashnikov), had a cleaning rod, lacked a bayonet lug, but a barrel-mounted bayonet was available. Manufacturing quality was very good. The stock, checquered pistol grip and fore-end were made of wood. The serial number was usually stamped into a panel milled out of the left side of the receiver, but manufacturer's marks were rarely present.
FÉG started re-tooling for the AK in 1957, and the first AK-55 left the factory in 1959. The receivers, which were machined from steel blocks, were made by Danuvia Gépgyár, which had better machining facilities than FÉG. From 1963 with the introduction of the AKM-63 with its sheet metal receiver, all parts are made by FÉG.

Barrel mounted Bayonet 273mm overall, 150mm blade length. Muzzle ring 17.5mm dia. Grips usually redish orange colored
